Covering an area of about 4,250 square miles, Chobe National Park is the third largest game park/reserve in the country. The Chobe River forms the northern border and in the southwest the park borders on the Moremi Reserve. The park consists of four main regions, each with its own types of vegetation and geological features. The area in the Chobe River flood plain is known as the Serondela region and is famous for its huge herds of elephant and buffalo. Hundreds of the huge animals can be seen coming down to drink at the river in the dry season. Game viewing by boat from the river can be very rewarding.
This area includes one-third of the Okavango Delta and is the prime tourist destination in Botswana. Forests of giant acacia and dense mopane woodlands are home to an amazing variety of land and water animals and spectacular bird life. The park is accessible all year with the best game-viewing in the dry season between April and November.
About one-fifth of the reserve is comprised of salt pans, the rest are rolling grasslands that attract thousands of animals in the rainy season between December and March. The Boteti River flows through the park and even when it is not flowing, residual pools attract the animals to drink. The banks of the river also provide lush vegetation.
The Okavango River rises in the distant highlands of Angola. As the river crosses the Botswana border it fans out to form the largest inland delta in the world, a unique ecosystem covering over 6,000 square miles. The green, palm-fringed islands that dot the area are a sharp contrast to the desert that surrounds the southern and western borders. Crystal-clear water provides a “highway” for the mokoros (dugout canoes) that allow access to the interior.
The Linyanti River (which is later named the Chobe River), forms a natural border between Namibia and Botswana. The river's course is smooth and gentle until it hits a volcanic fault line which causes a dramatic 90-degree change of course from south-east to north-east. Inside the right-angle corner created at this juncture, a swamp has formed (on the Namibian side), similar in appearance to the Okavango Delta, with papyrus lined waterways leading to towering riverine forests of giant ebony and marula trees.
This is one of the largest and most unspoiled parts of Africa. In the rainy season, this normally arid region teems with thousands of springbok and gemsbok. Wildebeest, hartebeest, lion, cheetah and giraffe are also plentiful. It is also an area where the nomad San people have lived for thousands of years. Covering an area of over 20,000 square miles, this is one of the largest reserves in the world.
