Chobe Game Lodge

Chobe Game Lodge is the only lodge in the Chobe National Park in Botswana situated on the magnificent Chobe River. This alone makes it a top choice destination for that once-in-a-lifetime safari experience.

Built in the early 1970's, the luxury African safari 5-star lodge was designed to make the most of the river frontage. The wide front veranda offers views of the river from comfortable and elegantly appointed seating areas. The lobby, library and lounges are light and airy, with soft creamy fabrics, surrounded by a myriad of wide and narrow archways, barrel-vault ceilings and terracotta tiled floors. The social Tshwene Bar has full-sized Victorian pool tables and double doors open out to the Terrace Restaurant, overlooking the river.

The recently built boardwalk has added a whole new dimension to game-viewing – simply find your favorite spot along this 250 meter elevated platform and settle down to watch the ever-changing wildlife parade across the river, islands, floodplains and even as far away as Namibia.

Fourteen professional guides from Botswana will share with you their intimate knowledge of the wildlife and flora of Chobe National Park. Not only are they qualified and enthusiastic nature guides but our team of lady guides will also share with you their passion for Botswana and their culture, ensuring that each guest leaves with a more rounded knowledge of this wonderful nation.

Activities at Chobe Game Lodge

There are three safari activities on offer every day. Stays at Chobe Game Lodge are fully inclusive, so you are welcome to do as little or as much as you please.

Our morning safari starts with a cup of tea or coffee and a freshly baked muffin on the veranda with the mist rising over the river in the background. Bird calls echo around the gardens to herald the dawn.

Because Chobe Game Lodge is situated within the Chobe National Park we set off just as the gates to the park open, which means we are out and about before any other visitors to the park. We drive along the river looking out for fresh tracks – there is always evidence of predator activity in the early mornings and our experienced guides are able to interpret the bush signs and track the animals that left them. The thrill of finding spoor and tracking game must be experienced to be appreciated and being the first observers at a special sighting is very exciting.

Elephant encounters are common and huge herds of buffalo abound. The ever-present impala and the majestic giraffe are everywhere. The peace and tranquility of game viewing in the early morning is a perfect way to start the day.

On return from the game drive and after a hearty breakfast, you can watch the animals begin to come down to the river, or spot wildlife across the floodplains on a mid-morning safari boat cruise. After lunch and a rest there is a choice of afternoon game drives or sunset safari cruises. Game viewing reaches its peak as the heat of the afternoon draws the elephant and other wildlife to the river. Don’t miss the safari cruise for the most spectacular sunsets on earth enjoyed on classic African fashion with a perfectly mixed drink!

The History of Chobe Game Lodge

The first lodge situated within the world famous Chobe National Park, Chobe Game Lodge is an iconic property in Botswana and was the first lodge of its kind in the country. When it was built in the early 1970s, the north-east region of the Chobe National Park had very little in the way of infrastructure, let alone tourism.

When the lodge was created in 1972, visitors could begin to enjoy a combination of the world-famous Victoria Falls and one of Africa's finest and most luxurious safari lodges in the astonishingly productive wildlife area along the Chobe River. In 1975, regular celebrity guests Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton decided to tie the knot (for the second time) at Chobe Game Lodge. When the press got wind of this the lodge and the region were catapulted into the international limelight, where they have stayed.

More than 40 years later, Chobe Game Lodge continues to evolve. It was among the first to be awarded the highest level of Ecotourism recognition by the Botswana Tourism Organisation, and we are always striving to be leaders in responsible tourism initiatives.

With Chobe Game Lodge's iconic status comes a lot of responsibility. Transforming a lodge built in the 1970's into an ecotourism-rated property has been no small feat and, with the first Biogas plant of its kind, the only all-female guiding team and one of the most dynamic youth trainee-development programs in the country, Chobe Game Lodge takes responsibility to another level and will continue to lead the way.
