Arathusa Safari Lodge

Arathusa Safari Lodge is unique and highly sought after by visitors because of its prime location within the Sabi Sand Reserve, adjacent to the unfenced Kruger National Park. Together these two areas comprise one of South Africa’s most incredible and pristine preserved wilderness sanctuaries. Arathusa offers an exceptional safari experience – expect a high concentration of an assortment of game, including the Big Five, and frequent leopard sightings. The lodge is situated on a large waterhole, ensuring interesting game and bird viewing from the comfort of the camp.

The camp is an intimate one; its open-plan design and natural building materials allow it to blend harmoniously with the African bush surrounds. The main living area is intended for comfort. Whether quietly reflecting on the view, reading a good book, or enjoying conversation with friends or fellow safari goers, the warmth and charm of the camp environment is the foundation of the Arathusa safari experience. The infinity swimming pool overlooks the waterhole, and is the perfect spot for wildlife viewing while cooling off on a sweltering African summer’s afternoon.

Dining at Arathusa Safari Lodge

Meal times at Arathusa are a sociable affair, and guests are treated to sumptuous dishes, fresh produce and daily baked confectionery from our kitchen. South Africa is renowned for its fresh produce – our fruits and vegetables are a primary export to international regions all over the world, and our meat, venison and poultry are first class.

Before departing on your morning safari, you will be offered coffee, tea and biscotti and rusks. While out in the bush, you will stop for a refreshment break of coffee or tea, with freshly baked baby muffins, rusks and oatmeal crunchies, to tide you over till breakfast! Breakfast is a choice of a continental breakfast – with fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, cheese & cold meats selection, or a hot breakfast to order.

Lunch is kept light and healthy, and guests have a choice of three dishes: a healthy fresh salad, a fish course or a red meat dish. Freshly baked cakes, tarts and fruit is served at High Tea prior to your afternoon game drive.

For sundowners during your afternoon drive, orders for your drink* of choice are taken at lunchtime, and snacks – including biltong (dried, cured meat, similiar to beef jerky), pastries, dried fruit, nuts and mini pies – are on offer.

When it comes to dinner, we pride ourselves on never dining at the same place twice during our guest’s stay. We have newly-built boma (traditionally an enclosure for livestock – Swahili or Afrikaans), where we serve traditional South African potjie dishes (a traditional South African meal cooked in a round, cast iron, three-legged pot). We also do fine dining at the lodge, where the chefs employ their creative flair with local fresh produce, and serve guests a stunning four-course meal.

The kitchen prides itself on being able to cater to any and all dietary requirements of our guests. We have reputable suppliers that can get us any special ingredients that we may need to create the perfect dish for anyone.

Activities at Arathusa Safari Lodge

Arathusa prides itself on its leopard viewing. As leopards are territorial, their regular appearance in our area allows us to plot their movements, and to observe their behavior. Many of the animals become familiar and are easily recognized, which enables us to name them. Approximately 14 leopards are seen in the area in which Arathusa operate, six of which are seen on a regular basis. Large herds of buffalo, numbering in excess of 300, often find their way to the waterhole in front of the lodge. One need not move far to enjoy the safari experience! Elephants are also seen in numbers.

Game drives, in an open safari vehicle, are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon every day in search of animals – both large and small.

Experienced, knowledgeable and personable rangers are paired with local trackers, and together they ensure a first class safari experience. Trackers sit up at the front of the vehicle looking for fresh animal tracks, while rangers skillfully navigate into ravines and through thickets in pursuit of fantastic game sightings. Close encounters are guaranteed, and the animals are not threatened by our presence thanks to our sound conservation management policies. Expect one-of-a-kind photographic opportunities of The Big Five, and much more – including over 300 bird species. A treat for keen birders!

Guided walks with an armed ranger may also be arranged. Walks are usually arranged in the early hours during the summer months, when temperatures are more moderate. Being on foot affords a unique and altogether different view of the bush.
