The Lodge

This 8-room lodge in Bale Mountain National Park (BMNP) in south-central Ethiopia is a boutique eco-lodge set in a breathtaking location in the middle of Africa’s largest remaining tract of Afro-alpine moorland. The lodge is set to maximize the spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, forest and streams. Each ‘tukul’ is built with local materials - both slate stone, sustainable wood and thatch. All guest rooms are en suite with hot water showers, flush toilets and spacious vanities. Fireplaces warm the cottages throughout the cold mountain nights and local textiles compliment the decor.. The lodge also utilizes true eco-practices including the use of biogas for cooking, hydro-electric power and other carbon-neutral efforts.

The only lodge of international tourist standards operating in the park currently, the Bale Mountain Lodge affords African Safari Company travelers immediate access to the park and its resident Ethiopian wolf. Our team is one of the few North American safari outfitters to have visited the lodge, so our knowledge of the area is first-hand and up-to-date. Opportunities for day hikes to waterfalls, birding, excursions to the Sanetti Plateau to search for the Ethiopian wolf and other wildlife abound. While access to Bale Mountain Lodge is incredibly challenging and on often arduous roads, the payoff is worthwhile and a 3 or 4-night stay is recommended to experience all the park has to offer. Wildlife in Bale Mountain National Park includes the Ethiopian wolf, giant forest hog, mountain nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, lions (the week before we visited a pride of lions was seen close to the lodge), and endemic and rare bird species.
