Belize City

Belize City falls short on the top list of Belize destinations but its history and vibrancy, despite its failing infrastructure, make it worth a stopover. The city is not particularly laid back, but many strides have been made in the city’s tourism industry to create a safe feel for visitors.

Belize City is the historical, if not the current, capital of the nation making it an interesting place to spend a day or two. The streets are in disarray at best, but are alive with colorful characters representing every facet of Belize’s ethnic diversity, including the predominant Creoles. Most of the commercial activity is centered around the Swing Bridge in the main downtown area. This old bridge joins North Front Street in the North Side to Albert and Queen Streets on the South Side. North Front Street runs parallel to the Haulover Creek and is intersected by Queen Street. wp-content/uploads/2016/08/belize-city-2.jpg Walking along this area leads through one of the oldest areas of the city. Poorly maintained colonial era clapboard style buildings mixed in with newer concrete buildings, many brightly painted pinks, blues and yellows. Amongst the run down streets also stand handsome colonial houses, seaside parks, bustling shopping areas and sailboats that bob at the mouth of Haulover Creek. Belize City may be a bit of a shock to the system and sometimes off putting, but dull it is not.

Belize City, for all of its struggles, is doing what it can to get back on the tourism map. Haulover Creek is lined with high end hotels, fine dining and shops and the beaches boasts white sands and the bluest of waters. All and all, while Belize City s far from being the center of an itinerary, it's definitely worth a day or two of exploring.
