Cayo District

The Cayo District, in Belize, is the premier adventure and eco-activity hub of the region. This lush Wild West, covering some two thousand square miles, is blanketed with exotic bird, vibrant flower and indigenous wildlife rich jungle woven with rivers, waterfalls and azure pools, and dotted with Maya ruins ranging from small, tree-covered hills to massive, magnificent temples. Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, El Pilar and the most known and visited of all Belizean Maya sites, Caracol, are all located in Cayo.

Inland from the beautiful Belize coast lines, the Cayo District offers tubing trips through river caves, zip-lining adventures over the jungle canopy on intricate courses with as many as nine launching platforms and horseback ride through the Maya Mountains as well as many other activities. This region also teems with nature, from botanic gardens and butterfly houses to primeval jungles and rainforests explorations that put only a pair of binoculars between you and its inhabitants including a variety of monkeys, coatimundi and the ever odd looking tapir.

The primary towns in this region are San Ignacio and Santa Elena as well as a variety of charming smaller villages that are scattered around the region. The notable Mennonite agricultural community of Spanish Lookout is also in the Cayo. San Ignacio’s Saturday open market is the country’s largest open market and a wonderful place to spend an afternoon wandering through. Located on the edge of town—next to the banks of the Macal River—the market is expansive, aromatic, and buzzing with activity. The stalls and tables are packed with abundant, colorful selection of fresh fruits, veggies, herbs and regional food on offer. All are locally grown and reasonably priced.

From cultural experience to active adventures to the deep Mayan history, the Cayo District is a Belize destination not to be missed!
