El Calafate

Founded in 1927, El Calafate is a small town located where the Santa Cruz plateau meets the Andes and is the gateway to the Perito Moreno Glacier in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. The town was named after a berry that, once eaten, would insure your return to Patagonia and this folklore seems to be true for El Calafate. Its popularity increased from the 1940’s, when the glacier park was established, to now has encouraged rapid growth and up-scaling of this once sleepy hollow. It’s strategic location between El Chaltén and Torres del Paine (Chile) has also played a large roll in its tourism boom making it an inevitable stop for travelers in transit.

The main strip, Av del Libertador General San Martín (typically abbreviated to Libertador), is dotted with cutesy knotted-pine souvenir shops, chocolate shops, restaurants and tour offices. Beyond the main street, pretensions melt away quickly as muddy roads lead to ad-hoc developments and open pastures. Sheep farms, cattle ranches and rolling green with the occasional gaucho become the predominant scenery framed by snow-caped mountains.

The town of El Calafate is a great day trip and the outskirts are not to be missed. Crystal blue glaciers accessible up close by small yacht, horseback back rides in the serene countryside alongside gauchos and being an active part of the day to day farms are only a few of the wonderful things El Calafate has to offer on an Argentina adventure.
