Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama Private Game Reserve is a South African Eden. Sweeping across 32,123 acres of savannah and riverine forest, Kapama represents a piece of Africa as it used to be with the mighty Drakensberg mountains in the distance and iconic Kruger National Park to the east. As part of the Greater Kruger Park, vast herds of buffalo, elephant and antelope are resident on Kapama, along with plentiful predators. Kapama is home to all of the iconic Big Five, as well as over 40 other mammal species and 350 different types of birds. This incredible area is home to just five lodges, all offering a true African safari experience.

This renowned South African game reserve was established in 1986, when the late Johann Roode bought a farm called Moria near Hoedspruit. He used it for cattle grazing, but soon more land was needed and Drakensig farm was acquired.

Harsh conditions and predators took their toll on the cattle, and a year later Johann began the transformation of the vast property into an ecotourism business. Named Kapama for the river that runs through the reserve, today Buffalo Camp stands on the original farm and River Lodge on the second farm. Extensive tracts of land have since been acquired and added to Kapama.

Now one of the Africa’s premier ecotourism destinations, Kapama Private Game Reserve is still owner-managed by the Roode family and is the largest private game reserve owned by one family in the area. In addition to luxury African safari game lodge accommodations across five establishments - each with a unique personality - the Roode family also manages the world-renowned Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species. On a visit here, rare wildlife - including king cheetah, wild dog, serval and nocturnal black-footed cat - can be seen up close.
