Mendoza

Founded in 1561 in a region defined by its foot hills and high plains, Mendoza is a bustling city with wide avenues, lively plazas and cosmopolitan cafes that operates at a laid-back pace. Mendoza is purportedly a desert town, though one would never guess. Acequias (irrigation ditches) run beside every main road and artfully sculpted fountains adorn the main plazas. The day to day of the town is quite lively, but it’s after the suns gone down that the streets truly shine. Restaurants and bars open and begin to fill up and overflow onto the sidewalks.

As the name Mendoza is synonymous around the world with wine, it is in fact the vibrant Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and rolling vineyards from which they come that it is famous for. Mendoza is one of the greatest wine regions of the world. With more than 1,500 wineries spread out through the three main wine regions - Lujan de Cuyo, Valle de Uco and Maipu - wide open spaces with nothing but vines, mountain grandeur and blue skies, and some of the best winery architecture in the world. With that said, wine tastings are a must and are enjoyed with friendly people and meals that often go on for hours. Activities like rafting, skiing, horseback riding and hiking are also popular in the Andean town.
