Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve is currently the fifth largest game reserve and is also one of the lesser-known parks in South Africa. This makes it a hidden-gem as it is regarded as one of the best conservation areas in Africa and offers the Big 5. The park offers a number of luxurious lodges as well as community lodges in a malaria-free zone. The land where Madikwe now stands was previously used as farming land. The poor soil meant that farming was mostly unsuccessful and the South African government then decided that it would best be used as a national park to help economically uplift the disadvantaged area.

At Morukuru's Madikwe villas, guests can experience the game reserve in a private vehicle on their own schedule. With an exclusive experienced guide and tracker enter the beauty of Madikwe home to the Big 5, wild dogs, 350 bird species and other wonders. Every game drive is equipped with a variety of snacks and drinks so on crisp mornings watch the sunrise whilst wrapping your fingers around a hot drink and be in awe of nature. For evening game drives enjoy the sunset that engulfs the African skies revealing a sheath of colour and warmth with a gin and tonic in hand. As the only guests on the vehicle, game drives are tailored to your preferences. Bush walks are available for guests over the age of 16 years.

Morukuru Owner's House

Tucked under the leafy canopy of an ancient Morukuru tree (Tamboti Tree), on the banks of the Marico River, lies this perfectly decadent, ultra luxurious home away from home. Ideal for honeymooners, couples or a small family, Owner's House was built by the owners as their own private retreat, with two huge en-suite bedrooms and a choice of shared spaces. Nestled in between the Morukuru Trees, surrounded by decks and balconies, Owner’s House offers plenty of peaceful nooks to hide off alone, or to gather for wonderful al fresco meals. Whether reclining together by your infinity pool, or alone in your private elevated sala, or just lying in bed with the doors wide open, the combination of dappled shade, and the sound of nature is deeply restorative.

The Owner’s House combines contemporary European styling with handpicked African pieces, and every luxury – including a team of 8 staff at your service, home office facilities, a superb wine cellar for your perusal, wifi connection, stereo system, DVDs, CDs, a small library stocked with topical books and the opportunity to bathe outside under the stars. Wood, stone and glass provide seamless design flow between indoors and outdoors.

Morukuru River House

River House is a multi-level Luxury Private Bush House perched on the banks of the most important river in the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Marico River, with a soundtrack of cascading waters. Morukuru River House offers three double en-suite bedrooms, each featuring every comfort, including super-king size beds, crackling fires (Gas fires), cooling and heating system, and large tree-shaded private decks. The spacious bathrooms have tubs with bush views and indoor as well as outdoor private showers. Four children can be comfortably accommodated in the separate family room/study with bunk beds, where they have access to recreational facilities such as satellite TV, Playstation, computer with internet and DVDs.

Like the Owner’s House, River House combines European styling with handpicked African pieces, wonderful indoor and outdoor flow, plenty of al fresco dining and unwinding opportunities, and the ultimate of holiday luxuries: a staff of seven to eight at your beck and call – including your own chef, butler, hostess, nanny (if needed), housekeeper and a private safari guide and tracker for game drives.

Morukuru Farm House

Located on the other side of the mountain within the Morukuru property, the five-suite Farm House is an oasis, surrounded by luscious green lawns, and set within a 100-hectare fenced-in safe area which is home to general game, so kids can play and roam at will, and guests may have the freedom to walk and explore. Furnished by well-known South African interior designer, Sumari Krige, the Farm House is bright & stylish, with bespoke items produced by local artists and craftsmen in a neutral palette. Following the owners’ brief to create spaces where families with children of all ages can completely relax, the overall sense is kick-off-shoes and curl-up-on-the-couch comfort. The five huge en-suite bedrooms – linked to the main area by a covered walkway – are all equally luxurious, because Morukuru believes that a family holiday should be special for every family member.

If you love the African bush, wide-open space and South African surroundings, Morukuru Farm House is the place to be. Multi generation travel, families and groups of friends, of all ages, have already found their way to the Farm House, and celebrated life to the fullest. Anniversaries, birthdays or, most important, spending quality time together, at this exclusive use house will be unforgettable. Your private staff will look after every single wish. They are highly skilled and are trained regularly, so they can give you the best.

Family-Friendly Approach

Morukuru was created by a family, for families. Operationally it is also run like a large extended family, with a real focus on the importance of bringing generations together – grandparents, parents, siblings and children, creating an album of memories to last a lifetime. Of course Morukuru Family set up the best ‘kiddies programme’; but they also believe children should be given the same individual care that adult guests receive, with each child’s particular food requirements, bedding preferences, interests, age and life experiences taken in to account. From the minute they arrive and are presented with their very own Morukuru Kidz backpack, Morukuru wants each child to feel special. Each villa offers a variet of child-specific activities, from spoor tracking lessons to baking biscuits, beading to mini-bush or ocean walks, scrap book making to board games. And for those kids who simply can’t live without technology, there is always access to wi-fi, computer stations, DVDs and Playstation.

Sometimes junior guests tire of the great outdoors and just want to chill out inside. They will find a host of goodies in their Morukuru backpacks to entertain and educate them simultaneously, about the African bush and ocean habitat (depending in which house you are staying). These include educational wildlife cards, beads, activity books, epitomizing a fun, interactive learning experience about wildlife, game, birdlife and Africa in general. We also have an extensive selection of children’s movies on DVD and other (board)games to keep them playing happily for hours!

Morukuru knows that adult guests come to rest, relax and unwind. Sometimes, that can best be achieved knowing that one’s children are in the responsible care of an experienced nanny. The staff will gladly tailor their nanny duties to your daily requirements, and are available at any time to ensure that your children are well taken care of and admirably entertained. While you go on a bush walk or enjoy a romantic sunset dinner...or just relax with a good book as the peace of Morukuru wraps itself around you, you can unwind while knowing your little ones are happy with their very own “Mary Poppins”.
