De Hoop Nature Reserve

The 89,000-acre De Hoop Nature Reserve offers 30 miles of pristine white beaches and dunes lapped by a warm Indian ocean, as well as limestone cliffs, rock pools, wetlands, coastal fynbos. The reserve is home to more than 260 species of birds. De Hoop is known for the continent's greatest whale nursery, and Ocean House offers a bird’s eye view of the nursery, as Southern Right whales migrate to the shallow coastal basins off the Overberg Coast for the calving and nursing season from mid-July to November.

The Ocean House

Morukuru Ocean House can accommodate 8 adults & 4 children (all ages are welcome). The 4 double suites all have their own en suite bathrooms and glass doors overlooking the ocean. Morukuru Ocean House is completely off the grid and features double-glazed windows and solar power, hence relieving the tension between tourism and sustainability offering guests five star luxury with limited damage to the environment.

Activities and Whale Watching

Activities at De Hoop Nature Reserve include fully-catered seaside picnics, star-gazing, guided coastal cave explorations, bird watching, snorkeling in the protected marine reserve, sandboarding, bike rides, fynbos nature and game drives, and marine walks.

Morukuru Ocean House offers the best land-based whale watching experience in Southern Africa. Sunny weather, endless white sand dunes and inviting rock pool, dolphins, porpoises and seals are all part of this oceanic experience whilst the greatest attraction remain the whales – mothers that come and calve in the marine protected bay of De Hoop. Watch in amazement as these enormous, powerful and graceful creatures reveal themselves and their young calves in the bay of De Hoop. Seven whale species have been reported in the waters of De Hoop. The best times to spot our Whale Families are from June to November with peak viewing months between August and September.
