Nahuel Huapi National Park

The area’s oldest established national park and one of Argentina’s most-visited, Nahuel Huapi is located in the country’s mountainous southwestern Neuquén and western Río Negro provinces. The park’s main feature, and for which it was named after, is Lago Nahuel Huapi, a glacial remnant stretching over 62 miles long that covers more than 193 sq. miles. A ridge of high peaks separates Argentina from Chile in the west with the tallest peak, an extinct volcano names Monte Tronador, reaching over 2 miles high. During the summer months, wildflowers blanket the alpine meadows beneath the mountains.

Nahuel Huapi, at nearly 2 million acres, was created in 1922 to preserve local flora and fauna, including its Andean-Patagonian forests and rare animals. The important animal species include the huemul (Andean deer) and the miniature deer known as pudú. While these animals are not likely to be seen when exploring the park by foot with a guide, or on a boat through the waterways, soaring condors and a wide variety of other bird species, Foxes and Chinchillones are frequently spotted.

Nahuel Huapi National Park boast some of the most remote wilderness with many areas only accessible by the inlets that wind through the thick forests, passing waterfalls and giant condor nest perched on 40 and 50 foot ledges along the way. During the Spring and into early Summer, a total of seven amazing waterfalls flow rapidly and can be touched from the boat. Incredible hiking trails with giant moss covered roots sprawling from ancient trees, snow capped volcanoes, a shy but diverse wildlife, wonderful birding and activities like horseback riding, kayaking and rafting are only a few things that make Nahuel Huapi National Park an amazing destination to add to an Argentinian adventure.
