Simien Lodge

Simien Lodge is located in the Simien Mountains and is deemed “Africa’s Highest Lodge” at nearly 11,000 feet in elevation – currently it is the only lodge in the park area. It has been said that Simien trekking is some of the most spectacular in the world. Most of the good trekking starts about 25km from Debarak and the some of the best views are from Buit Ras to Sankabur. Up to Buit Ras is largely farmland. The trek to Imeg Gogo is arduous rather than spectacular but once at Imet Gogo the vista is incredible.

Each of the 26 main rooms are housed in traditional Ethiopian “tukuls” and are en suite with flush toilets and showers (hot water is provided by solar, with electric back-up). Solar heating also warms the tile floors when there is enough sunlight. Due to the elevation, nights can be very cold, so please be prepared with warm clothes. The lodge also features a cozy bar “The Highest Bar in Africa” where guests can enjoy an Ethiopian beer or glass of wine from the Rift Valley. The restaurant serves simple, but hearty international and Ethiopian cuisine.

Activities & WIldlife at Simien Lodge

Trekking in the Simien mountains has been the main activity for a long time. Once up on the escarpment, it is possible to walk through forests and over grassland for hundreds of miles. The lodge is near the entrance of the park where the whole scenery opens out with magnificent views for hundred of kilometers. This is where the predator animal activity starts. The gelada baboons sleep on the cliff edges at night and their predators, such as hyena and leopard, roam the cliff edges. Wolves have been spotted near the lodge in the past but generally they live beyond Chennuk.
