Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

Nestled deep in the heart of Namibia's ancient Namib Desert in Southern Africa, the Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is a secluded and serene oasis that overlooks awe-inspiring dunes and stony outcrops. Elements of bone, slate and stone create a dramatic, yet entirely natural, look, while rough timber work, twiggy chandeliers and wooden sculptures call to mind the craggy mountains. Massive windows in the split-level bedroom and sitting room, as well as the ensuite bathroom, open onto the wide plains where you can’t help but lose yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the desert from the comfort of your private veranda. The dusky pink colors of the natural rose quartz that Namibia is known for provide a fresh contrast to the creams and grays of the interiors.

Guest areas flow into vast desert views, as the stone and glass structure of the Lodge melts into wraparound verandas. Cool water gushes from an underground spring into the refreshing lodge pool, while an extensive walk-in wine cellar provides refreshment of a different sort. Mouth watering dinners are served by lantern light on the open dining veranda or in a surprise location in the nearby dunes. When night falls, our resident astronomer reveals the mysteries of the stars in our state of the art observatory.

With just ten villas constructed of stone and glass, guests can enjoy the solitary splendor of this remote landscape in privacy. Each spacious, air-conditioned suite features a shaded deck, split level bedroom and living room with fireplace for cool evenings, en-suite glass encased bathroom and outdoor shower.

A Day at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

After an early morning wake up call with coffee, tea and light snacks, set out to explore the NamibRand Nature Reserve on a scenic morning game drive, which concentrates on unique desert-adapted plants and wildlife, as well as the starkly beautiful desert landscapes. Return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes.

If you wish, you can walk off your breakfast on a short walk near the lodge. It is safe for you to walk alone, but you can ask your guide to accompany you on a longer walk to a cave with San Bushman paintings, sharing his invaluable insight into the smaller animals and vegetation of the area en route. Return to the lodge in time for lunch, served on the wraparound verandas.

Cool off with a refreshing dip in the pool or indulge in a siesta before afternoon tea. If you're feeling adventurous enough, venture out on a quad bike trail, led by an experienced guide. Well established trails lead over the dunes and rocky outcrops.

Upon return from your evening activity, a mouthwatering dinner awaits back at the lodge or in a dramatic desert location. After dinner, a resident astronomer unlocks the secrets of the southern skies at the lodge's observatory. End your night looking up into African stars through the skylight positioned above your king sized bed.
