Tarangire Sopa Lodge

Tarangire is recognized as one of the best parks on the northern circuit for elephant viewing during the dry season and Tarangire Sopa is ideally placed to experience this. The lodge welcomes guests to its vast marble-floored reception area with cold flannels and iced juice. In the pretty gardens a large circular pool with a central island, a pool bar and elegant wooden loungers demonstrates the lodge's commitment to comfort. Delicious barbecue lunches are often served here. A broad veranda wraps itself around the lodge and gives prime viewing for the waterhole below, which is filled during the dry season and becomes a magnet to wildlife.

Built to blend in with the vastness of its surroundings, Tarangire Sopa Lodge lies hidden among the kopjes, ancient baobab and grasses of the Tarangire National Park - home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Many can be seen around the lodge, allowing visitors a close encounter. Built on different levels, the main public area building offers an extremely cool respite from the outdoor heat as soon as you step into the reception.

With a perfumed towel and a chilled welcome drink in hand, you suddenly become aware of the sheer size of the lobby with its glistening marble floors, colorful hand-woven carpets, and an incredibly high roof. From here a short flight of steps takes you up a level and into the lounge and bar with floor to ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace where you can enjoy an evening sundowner and, later perhaps, a game of pool in the area behind the bar.

Rooms at Tarangire Sopa Lodge

There are 75 spacious rooms, all with a private lounge on entering with a mini bar. Each room has 2 queen size beds with a mosquito net around them and well appointed wash rooms. Circular guest suites with their high, conical roofs fan out to either side of the public areas. The Tarangire Lodge is not fenced, allowing the area to remain a traversing path for the wildlife. Guards will escort you to and from your room ion the evenings and at night.

The rooms boast simple decor with a spacious airiness and wonderful views from sheltered verandas in which to enjoy the sunrise or set.

Dining at Tarangire Sopa Lodge

On the other side of the reception lobby is Tarangire Sopa's coffee shop where you can enjoy one of a wide range of Tanzanian highland brews together with one of the freshly baked pastries. Adjacent to this area a flight of steps takes you down into the dining room for a leisurely, and well put together, meal beneath an intricate mural painted onto a high gable at one end of the room. The multi-colored timber floor and copper nails help transform this dining area into a true work of art.

However, if you relish the great outdoors, the restaurant has a terrace running along one side of its entire length so you can enjoy your breakfast with a view over the park’s tree-studded, grassy plains and roaming wildlife.

Weather permitting, lunch is always served at the lodge’s lowest level and beside the swimming pool with its central island and bar along a dry river bed which fills up during the rainy seasons. As for dinner, the dining room has an enormous outdoor patio where dinner is served every other night. This experience beneath Africa’s star filled sky is quite simply one you will never forget.
