The Activities

A truly African experience goes beyond the five senses. It’s felt. An early morning or late afternoon safari is the best way to absorb the sights, smells and sounds of Africa. Encounter the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo): the animals that inspire a long-lasting connection with the continent. And, once you’ve found them, go looking for Africa’s other famous five – the Little Five (elephant shrew, rhino beetle, leopard tortoise, ant lion and buffalo weaver).

Your private guide and tracker are experts in the circle of life, and how it spins both slowly and frenetically in the African bush. They will offer you wildlife lessons from their own cultures and knowledge and happily share stories and anecdotes. They will explain, inform, educate and then sit back and let you fall in love with the wild in your own way. With 14 000 hectares to explore, you’ll see diverse wildlife including cheetah, hyena, warthog and the occasional wild dog, as well as abundant bird and plant life.

Beach briaas (BBQs) and croc and hippo cruises are also on offer. Located about 2,5 hours from Thanda by car is 9 Mile Beach – a coastline that invites guests to experience a different kind of African beauty: one where sun, sand and sea combine to create the perfect beach location.

What is more, it’s all exclusively yours. Thanda is a private game reserve and our dedicated staff members are the only people you’ll encounter on the roads while you’re here.

Head out on morning and evening game drives in search of the incredibly diverse, and rich wildlife in the area. During your evening game drive, make a stop to enjoy a drink or cocktail of your choice while you watch the sun fade behind the vast African horizon. Sundowners are a long safari tradition. For the unique opportunity to get a feel for Africa under foot, learn more about the plants and insects and for the chance of an up close wildlife encounter you may venture out with you guide on a walking safari. Thanda also has an incredible resident wildlife photographer to help you catch that perfect moment and for those of us who need a little guidance with our cameras. Visits to the local Zulu village to learn about their day to day lives is a great way to submerge yourself in an incredible culture. However you choose to explore, iZulu is set to accommodate your activities at your leisure.

The Kids & Creatures

Watching your children experience the bush, discover new places and have new adventures? Priceless. At Thanda we understand that you want to share your African journey with your kids, but also need the space to do your own exploring. Thanda's Bucks & Bugs Club ensures that your kids have the time of their lives, while you enjoy the adult activities and services the Reserve offers. From the time they arrive, kids are given all the tools they need to experience Thanda safely while gaining a great knowledge of the bush and a truly inspiring safari experience of their own.

Kids can join the Junior Rangers Course and spend time with one of Thanda's guides, learning the ways of the wild including game tracking, game spotting, spoor identification as well as bird and plant life. At the end of their stay, they will receive a Junior Ranger Certification. Your private chef is also prepared to offer a special kids menu to make sure that snacks, meals and packed picnics are just right. On site nannies, and mother themselves, are available during game drives and walks to give you a chance to explore on your own.

The Cuisine

South African cuisine is as diverse as its population and your menus will be carefully created by the Villas private chef reflect this as well as your likes, dislikes and dietary requirements. Rich potjiekos – slow-cooked to perfection. Delicious game meat – prepared with care. Freshly grown vegetables - grown and nurtured locally. This is Villa iZulu's promise.Beyond the kitchen, the reserve is enormously proud of the herb garden, located and carefully tended at Villa iZulu. This garden provides the fragrant organic herbs and flavors that so perfectly characterize the wide range of exquisite dishes.

These amazing meals can be enjoyed in the traditional African boma with the stary South African sky as the perfect backdrop, in the bush on a romantic picnic for two or proper bush breakfast whilst out on morning game drive, in the privacy of your room, in the well appointed indoor dining area or on the Villas deck for an al fresco option.
