Yaxha Nakum Naranjo National Park

Yaxha Nakum Naranjo National Park

The Cultural Triangle Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park is the first mass joint project involving archaeologists, architects, restaurateurs, biologists and workers. Situated in Peten, Guatemala, the project includes the Mayan archaeological site itself as well as 460 sq miles with three gigantic sites in total and 14 sub enters making it the most populated area of the Mayan Classic.

Since the projects founding in 1994, over 300 Guatemalan workers and 12 scientist and archaeologist have restored the main temples from the collapsing status they were found in to a park safe for visitors to wonder freely. Today, thanks to these continued efforts, a variety of temples, palaces, ball-courts and observatories can be explored. The view of the lake and rainforest from the top of Temple 216 is a particularly great spot to take a minute.

Due to the presence of impressive lagoons and wetlands in Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo, the park is also part of the main migratory bird routes and has been recognized as a wetland of worldwide importance (RAMSAR). The Yaxha and Sacnab lagoons can be seen from the top of several archaeological monuments, giving the area a unique beauty.
