Zarafa Dhow Suites

Set just a short distance from Zarafa Main Camp, yet operating entirely separately, are the magnificent Dhow Suites. Keeping with the theme of early exploration but with an East African coastal style, the Dhow Suites are designed for those seeking an exclusive villa experience unlike any other on offer in Africa. ach tent comes with its own Canon professional camera including a Canon 40D body and 35-135 mm and 100-400mm zoom lenses for use during a stay. Photos are then burned to a DVD as a souvenir at the end of your stay. Hosted by a private staff and guide, the camp welcomes private groups of up to five (assuming children share with parents).

In keeping with the revolutionary environmentally friendly methods used in the construction of Zarafa’s main camp, the Dhow Suites have been constructed with maximum focus on minimising the impact on the pristine environment, which surrounds them. Energy comes from Zarafa’s pioneering “solar farm” consisting of over 150 205-watt solar panels, which produce enough electricity during daylight hours to handle the electrical needs of both the main camp and the Suites. As with the Zarafa camp, Zarafa’s Dhow Suites’ game drive vehicle operates on a mix of vegetable oil (85%) and diesel (15%), a completely new initiative in the safari industry, and drinking water is treated through a UV filtration system which eliminates the use of disposable plastic water bottles. These components make Zarafa one of the “greenest” camps on the planet.

Accommodation at Zarafa Dhow Suites

The two 2200 sq foot (210 m2) suites are outfitted with similar appointments to Zarafa main camp but on an even grander scale. The Suites’ main area spreads over two levels, with a main pool deck below the upper dining and fire deck. Adjoining the lounge is the main bedroom and dressing area, where the overhead fans and seductive mosquito nets set the ambiance. Exiting the bedroom, a beautiful copper gas fireplace is strategically placed between the bathroom and the bedroom to allay the chill of the winter months. The main bathroom is comprised of a copper bath and shower, double sinks and private toilet. Off the bathroom, the raised walkway leads to the outdoor shower, complete with wrap around showerheads! The private verandah, running the length of the front of the tent, offers a private plunge pool, outdoor lounge and sweeping view of Zibadianja Lagoon's waters.

Activities at Zarafa Dhow Suites & The Selinda Reserve

Early morning and late afternoon/early evening game viewing in a private open 4×4 vehicle, guided walks and cruising on the Zibadianja Lagoon on “HMS Zib” when water levels permit. There is an open-air gym and in-room massages are available.

There are few places in northern Botswana as dynamic as the Selinda Reserve, which is centered on the famous Selinda Spillway, which weaves its way east, linking the far reaches of the Okavango Delta in the south with the Linyanti water systems in the east. The Selinda Reserve is west (upstream) from Savute Channel and Chobe, so it has all the advantages of both of those famous areas but with the tremendous advantage of exclusivity. It is a truly spectacular and unique landscape. On safari it is possible to see a tremendous diversity of species, from resident prides of lion to huge herds of elephant and packs of wild dog. It is also home to the ungulates, from the rare roan to the ubiquitous zebra. Nocturnal wildlife is prolific as well, and there are frequent sightings of aardwolf and civet.
