Gorilla Mountain View Lodge
The Lodge
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is located in Kinigi in northern Rwanda and on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas.
The lodge is located on the foothills of the Mount Karisimbi, one of the volcanic mountains that make up the Virunga Massif. The lodge is about 10 minutes’ drive to the main entrance of the Volcanoes National Park where gorilla trekking starts.
The lodge grounds are very well maintained and from here there are beautiful views of the volcanoes. A local dance troupe entertains every afternoon (except Sundays). The central area has a bar and a restaurant where the food is good home cooked fare. We definitely also advise to you to dress warmly for dinners during the winter months. However if you are chilly in the mountain evenings, just ask the staff for a ‘bucket’ of heated charcoal that you can put next to your table to help keep you warm. Electricity and hot water are supplied by a generator that is turned on at about 6 pm, and runs until 11:00 am in the morning.
The Rooms
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is an ecolodge with 30 spacious brick cottages. To ensure the least disruption of the surrounding environment, the ecolodge was constructed with locally available material. Each large bedroom has an accommodating sitting area and a fireplace with simple, but comfortable, furnihsings. Being at altitude, it can get cold here and the fireplaces are lit every evening by the staff. Every cottage comes with a sitting area with a fireplace and has a tea/coffee making machine.
The ecolodge supports the surrounding rural community by purchasing farm-fresh produce that is served in the lodge’s restaurant.
The Activities
Activities at the lodge include mountain gorilla trekking, Golden monkey trekking, Velvet monkey trekking, bush dinners, visits to the Diann Fossey Memorial, visits to the Twin Lakes and cultural visits.
