About Phinda Private Reserve

Phinda is often referred to as ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder.’ The areas fascinating variety of landscape and vegetation shelters an abundance of wildlife, including not only the Big Five but many rarer and less easily spotted species, such as the elusive cheetah or the scarce black rhino. With only a handful of lodges and expert rangers and trackers in search of prime wildlife sightings, Phinda offers an exclusive African safari game viewing experience. Adding to Phinda’s wildlife charms, the marine diversity of nearby Sodwana Bay on the coast is easily accessible, with beautiful reefs, dolphins and turtles.

Located to the east of the lush World Heritage Site iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, Phinda’s more than 56,830 acres comprise seven distinct ecosystems, including the rare sand forest, making it a destination for African safaris like no other.

Phinda is a Zulu word meaning ‘the return’, which signifies that Phinda Private Game Reserve was the location of one of the biggest reintroductions of game in Africa. The area was restocked with lion, rhinoceros, buffalo, elephant, leopard, giraffe and other big game in “Operation Phinda Izilwane”, meaning ‘return of the wild animals’. Thanks to its coastal rainfall pattern, Phinda’s lush green environment, and seven distinct ecosystems, make it ideal for a wide variety of game.

Each lodge is perfectly located and individually unique. Phinda Vlei Lodge boasts a modern, open feel of the rooms, and the proximity to the forest and vlei, make this a wonderful, unique place to stay. In addition, the small number of rooms and the space between them helps generate a feeling of real exclusivity.

Forest Lodge puts you in the heart of the famous Dry Sand Forest in rooms that are raised above the forest floor to minimize their ecological impact.

Phinda Rock is a very exclusive lodge, small, intimate and beautifully decorated: perfect for those looking for privacy and also for those who appreciate traditional African art and architecture.

The incredible Mountain Lodge sits atop one of the rolling summits in the hillier part of the Phinda Reserve, and from the central lodge decking there are great views out over the bush. Regardless of your safari style, Phinda Reserve has a lodge that will fit perfectly into your African Safari adventure.
