Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, you will be met at the Puerto Maldonado airport and transfer ten minutes to the lodge’s Puerto Maldonado headquarters. You will be asked to take only a small duffle bag with necessary items for your stay in the Amazon – the rest of your gear for the Andes can be left at the secure luggage storage facility at the office. This helps keep the river boats and cargo light. After everything is packed up, transfer 12 miles to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. Board the boat for a 2-3 hour boat ride into the buffer zone of this 1.3 million hectare conservation area and on to your lodge, Refugio Amazonas. Enjoy a boxed lunch en route. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important safety tips and information for your stay in the Amazon.
The guides at Refugio Amazonas are biologists, tourism professionals, or community members. Unless noted otherwise, the guides speak English, or a translator will be provided. The guide ratio is 10:1, however, if you would like a private guide please let us know in advance and one may be available at an additional cost.
This evening enjoy a tasty dinner at the lodge before heading out on your first activity. A nighttime caiman search! Head out with your guide scanning the river’s edge and shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes. Return to the lodge for overnight.
